How to Give Your Family Room a Romantic Makeover

by Pam Silvia

1. Paint the town pastel

For our first tip, we recommend sticking with a light color palette, as soft, non-dramatic colors cultivate a more relaxing ambiance. Darker colors offset your mood and make a room feel constricted if they don your walls and furniture.

Creams, pastels and neutrals give your room illusory depth since softer colors reflect the natural light emitted through your windows—making the room appear bright and open.

2. Love at first seat

Punch up the romance factor with antique-style loveseats and sofas! Feel like you’re transported to a Jane Austen novel with exposed-leg furniture with ornate accents. An understated floral upholstery adds a romantic flair that is integral to early-20th-century interior design.

3. Turn the lights down low

Bright, harsh lighting can be jarring, whereas soft, warm lighting can cast an understated golden glow. Install dimmers on all light switches, and add charm with tasseled lamps, tealights and pillar candles—because what’s more romantic than candlelight?

In the daylight, curtains that are marketed as “room-darkening” reduce sun rays, letting some light in without engulfing your room in a blackout.

4. Flower power

Not just for gifting on Valentine’s Day, floral bouquets make beautiful natural ornaments for your home. We recommend white and pink arrangements (especially of roses!) if you want to evoke softness and timelessness—eclectic, vibrantly colored floral arrangements, while cheery, may foster a more kitschy aesthetic.

Since color coding is a pillar of interior design, we suggest sticking with light or pastel flowers as they are more neutral and decrease the probability of visual cacophony in your décor.

5. Swing from the chandelier

No home accent summons the idea of regality quite like the crystal chandelier. Take your family room to new heights with a vintage-style light fixture. This simple installation ushers an immediate elegant effect, and when in use, a chandelier provides romantic ambient lighting.
