8 Ways to Accessorize Your Home for Fall

by Dale Dauterive

1. New Color Palette

If you’re decorating your indoor living space for fall, try bringing together color combinations of autumn reds and oranges with neutral colors to contrast with your decor. Olive, taupe, or blue are much warmer, muted colors to act as clean alternatives to bold hues. Throw pillows, table decorations, and accent rugs are easy accessories to invest in to get started playing with new color palettes.

2. Woodsy Elements

Rustic, woodsy elements can be found at your local farmers market or in your own backyard. Fill pots, vases, and wreaths with moss, grasses, or small branches. You can make a combination of all three and use these outdoor elements to create natural decoration features for fall. A bundle of twigs can be made into a picture frame, candle holders, or even string lighting to go over your mantel.

3. Intricate Details

It’s the attention to detail that can go a long way in your fall place setting. If you’re hosting the Thanksgiving dinner, tie a name tag to some leafy twigs to make fun place holders for your guests. Dress up pinecones and acorns with craft store pearls and tie them together with strands of velvet ribbon to create an elegant utensil or napkin holders.

4. Hone in on Harvest

Celebrate the fall season with cozy country touches. This can be in the form of artwork, wooden accent pieces, tapestry--you name it. A wicker basket filled with throw pillows and blankets provide warmth and comfort to any autumn meeting place. If you’re sipping on hot apple cider or cuddling up for a movie, a soft blanket and the right decorations will make any indoor living space feel just like fall.

5. Choose Pieces to Last the Holidays

Fall is an important time of year, but it’s only the beginning of the hectic holiday season. It’s important to choose decorative pieces that will remain timely throughout the holiday months or that can be spruced up during each season to save time and money on your decor budget. Pinecones and dried berries stay relevant during the winter--but after Thanksgiving, make sure to exchange your decorative corn husks for faux-snow and holiday ornaments to give your holiday accessories a brand new joyful presence.

6. Wrap it in Wreaths

Wreaths are a classic and versatile fall decoration that you can make from almost any indoor material. Play with combinations of wheat, leaves, and twigs to match the decor throughout the fall season. Lay them flat to frame pumpkins and candles, or place them as a centerpiece for your dining room table.

7. Light My Fire

A nice fragrant candle is a great addition to add light and warmth to any room in the house. There are numerous scents to match the season if you want your home to smell of apples, cloves, and cinnamon, or you can stick with neutral colors and scents and swap out the embellishments and containers to reuse throughout the year.

8. Share Stories

Arranging your furniture and decorations to leave plenty of space for conversation is a great way to bring people together during the holiday months. Adding additional seating around a fireplace creates a warm and comforting space for fall fellowship. If you don’t have a fireplace, try putting a couple of chairs together in a corner, add floor lamps and candles for ambiance, and keep a stack of books nearby for a peaceful area to watch the leaves fall.
