6 Decor Tips to Enjoy Your Patio Through Fall

by Dale Dauterive

1. Go with Gourds

Line your front porch or walkway with a row of pumpkins and gourds. Mix and match sizes, colors, and textures and interlace each gourd with ivy and other fall-time greens to replicate the natural look you’d find at a pumpkin patch. It’s a great way to incorporate multiple decorations because any additional pumpkins can be used for carving. Some spooky jack o’ lanterns will fit nicely in your patch of gourds.

2. Corn is King

A juicy, buttery corn-on-the-cob might be thought of during the summertime, but dry, rustic corn is a great addition to your front porch decor during the fall. Dried flint corn adds a splash of color and texture to any outdoor setting. You can tie a few cobs together for a simple yet festive arrangement to hang on your front door or porch railing. If you have any leftover corn cobs, they are a nice touch for your table centerpiece as well.

3. Include More Than Just Orange

Orange might be the most popular fall color, but that doesn't mean your patio color scheme has to include that one color. You can make a stunning and striking statement by sticking with unexpected colors. A display of white pumpkins might not replace the spooky effect of traditional gourds, but they create a cool, calming arrangement for your patio to celebrate with class instead of scares.

4. Display Colorful Flowers

There’s nothing like the warm hues of fall foliage, especially in your autumn decor. Choose two or three different flowers with a variety of colors. Dark yellow and burnt orange blend together beautifully for an outdoor display. You can arrange your plants in fun ways for fall like inside a wagon, bushel basket, or old wheelbarrow. They evoke the harvest season and provide festive decorations to include on your porch. The best part is, they can be easily moved to other areas of your house if you want to add a splash of autumn to your backyard as well.

5. Feed the Birdies

You might be decorating your patio for fall, but that doesn’t mean it’s all about you. Birds and other critters are drawn to the colors and designs of fall decorations. They look for reliable food sources when the leaves fall and the weather starts to get chilly. Include a gourd bird feeder in your outdoor decor and tie with a sturdy rope. You can make your feeders throughout the winter months to make sure the birds keep singing around your yard for the rest of the year. It’s a great DIY project for the kids to help them craft and get in the fall spirit.

6. Get Your Vegetables In

You don’t need to enjoy the taste of vegetables to decorate with them. Sprinkling in some cabbage or kale plants brings crisp, bright colors to your harvest landscape. The eye-catching greenish hues combine with alyssum, violas, and garden mums to create a vibrant autumn planter box. The best part is, flowering cabbage and kale can withstand temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit. In wintery areas where the numbing chill and frost arrive early, these plants won’t continue to grow, but they’ll maintain their current health through the winter.

If kale is too strange for your home decor, at the very least, hang a wreath. A floral display with rich autumn colors creates a warm and welcoming entryway.
